Chapter 1

The Fallen Stars

Illustration for The Fallen Stars

Sofia couldn't believe her eyes. The meadow behind her house was sparkling — not with dew, but with tiny fallen stars scattered across the grass like diamonds.

Ember nudged her hand with his warm nose. His tail flickered with soft orange light, as if he already knew something magical was happening.

"Look at them all, Ember," Sofia whispered, kneeling down. She reached out and touched one. It hummed gently in her palm, warm and alive.

Into the Starlight Forest

The fallen stars formed a glowing trail that led into the forest at the edge of the meadow. Sofia had walked past those trees a hundred times, but tonight they shimmered with silver light.

Ember trotted ahead, his glowing tail lighting the path. The trees arched overhead like a cathedral, their leaves catching starlight and scattering it in rainbow patterns on the forest floor.

"It's like walking inside a snow globe," Sofia said, spinning slowly to take it all in.

The Star Keeper's Garden

Deep in the forest, they found a clearing filled with the most extraordinary garden Sofia had ever seen. Flowers made of pure light swayed in a breeze she couldn't feel.

In the center sat an old tortoise with a shell that looked like a constellation map. "Ah," he said slowly, peering at Sofia. "A star-toucher. We haven't had one of those in quite some time."

Ember sat beside Sofia, his tail curling protectively around her ankles.

Chapter 4

The Fading Light

The Star Keeper explained that the stars had fallen because the Great Lantern at the top of the oldest tree had gone dark. Without it, the stars lost their way home.

"Can we relight it?" Sofia asked.

The tortoise looked at her kindly. "Only someone who carries starlight in their heart can climb the Ancient Oak. And your fox — his light tells me you might be that someone."

Sofia looked at Ember. He looked right back at her with bright, trusting eyes.

Climbing the Ancient Oak

The Ancient Oak was enormous — its trunk wider than Sofia's whole house, its branches disappearing into the night sky. Glowing handholds appeared wherever Sofia reached, as if the tree itself was helping her climb.

Ember scrambled up beside her, his paws finding holds she couldn't see. His tail cast a warm circle of light around them both.

Higher and higher they climbed, until the forest below looked like a sea of silver leaves.

Chapter 6

A Sky Full of Stars

At the very top, Sofia found the Great Lantern — a crystal sphere, dark and cold. She placed both hands on it and thought about everything she loved: drawing under the apple tree, Ember's warm fur, the way stars looked from her bedroom window.

The lantern blazed to life. Light poured upward in a fountain of gold and silver, and the fallen stars rose from the meadow and forest, streaming back into the sky like a river of light.

Sofia watched, tears of wonder on her cheeks, as the night sky filled with stars again. Ember pressed against her side, his tail glowing brighter than ever.

"We did it," she whispered. And somewhere far below, the Star Keeper smiled.
